Invention No. 12 in A major, BWV 783, is one of the 15 two-part inventions in Bach's Inventions and Sinfonias, BWV 772 to 801, a collection of thirty short keyboard pieces: 15 inventions in two voices and 15 sinfonias in three. They began as Praeambula and Fantasiae in the Klavierbüchlein Bach kept for his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, and were later rewritten as exercises for his students. The inventions were composed in Köthen, and the autograph fair copy is dated 1723. Bach's title page sets out the aim: to learn to play two voices clearly, then three, to have good ideas and carry them out well, and above all to arrive at a singing, cantabile style of playing. Each group runs in ascending key order, eight major keys and seven minor. The chart is 352 notes over 1:10, 211 in the right hand and 141 in the left, at about 5 notes per second and 5.7 in the busiest 25 seconds, 0:24 to 0:49. Every note lies between G sharp3 and B5, so a 49-key keyboard covers it.

One of Bach's 15 two-part Inventions, written as exercises for his keyboard students.

It runs at about 5 notes per second and peaks at 5.7. The right hand plays 60% of the 352 notes and the left 40%. Klaviero rates it tier 3 of 5.
