January, subtitled At the Fireside and here By the Hearth, opens Tchaikovsky's The Seasons, Op. 37a, twelve short character pieces for piano, one for each month. In 1875 Nikolay Bernard, editor of the St. Petersburg music magazine Nouvellist, commissioned the set and suggested a subtitle for each month. Tchaikovsky accepted the commission and all of the subtitles, and the December 1875 issue promised readers a new piece every month through 1876. January and February were written in late 1875 and sent to Bernard in December with a request for feedback on whether they suited him. The verse epigraphs printed with each piece were chosen by Bernard, not by Tchaikovsky. January is in A major. The chart is 1,492 notes over 4:41, two thirds of them in the right hand. It averages 5.3 notes per second and reaches 7.6 at its busiest, between 0:29 and 0:54, so it is a gentle piece with a few fuller passages. The notes run from A1 to E7, and 5 of them fall outside a 61-key keyboard.
