Transcendental Étude No. 5 in B flat major, Feux follets (Will-o'-the-wisps), is the fifth of Franz Liszt's twelve Transcendental Études, S. 139. Like all but one of the set it went through three versions: a study in the Étude en douze exercices of 1826, a reworking in the Douze grandes études of 1837, and the final revision, published with the whole set in 1852 and dedicated to Carl Czerny, Liszt's piano teacher. That last version is the one usually played. Its rapid double notes in the right hand, over wide broken intervals in the left, are notoriously hard, and the passages are often asymmetrical and unpredictable. The double-note sections are marked pianissimo and leggierissimo again and again, so the challenge is to keep all of it light and whimsical rather than loud.
