A flowkey alternative for your MIDI keyboard
flowkey details checked on 2026-08-06. Klaviero's numbers are measured on every build.
flowkey is a lesson platform with video teachers. Klaviero is a falling-notes trainer that grades every note you play on a MIDI keyboard. They are different products that both involve a piano, and the honest way to choose is to know which one you actually want.
Klaviero needs a MIDI keyboard and Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Opera on a desktop or laptop. It cannot run in Safari or on an iPhone or iPad, because Apple does not support the Web MIDI API and requires every iOS browser to use Safari's engine. Full requirements.
The short answer
Klaviero is a free-to-start alternative to flowkey that runs in a browser and scores you note by note on a real MIDI keyboard. flowkey is not a bad product and this page does not pretend it is. What follows is where each one actually wins, so you can pick on something other than a headline.

Where flowkey is the better choice
Video teachers. flowkey has graded video courses with a teacher on screen. Klaviero has no video lessons. If you have never played and want to be walked through it on video, flowkey is built for that.
Microphone input. flowkey listens to an acoustic piano. Klaviero's scoring needs MIDI.
iPad. flowkey runs on an iPad. Klaviero cannot.
Pop and film music. flowkey's library spans genres. Klaviero's is classical.
Where Klaviero is
A reason to keep playing. A lesson platform measures whether you finished the lesson. Klaviero measures the run: combo, accuracy, grade. Those produce different behaviour.
Published pricing. Klaviero's free tier needs no card and the paid prices are on the page. flowkey's are not reachable without starting a signup.
Measured difficulty. You can see a piece's peak notes per second before you try it, which is the number that actually decides whether it is too hard today.
Try it on this one
Clair de Lune · C. Debussy · 1,491 notes · 4:08 · peak 11.2 n/s. It is on the free tier, so it needs no card. Plug the keyboard in and press play.
What switching costs you
Nothing to uninstall and nothing to migrate. Klaviero reads your own MIDI files too, so anything you already had still plays. The free tier covers a piece from every composer group and needs no card, which is enough to find out in ten minutes whether the scored format is the thing you were missing.
